Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 30, 1873

Overview

Viewed in daylight, the sketches make a strong impression, especially Valhalla and the awakening of the Wala. The painter Hoffmann seems more cultured than first expected and shows respect for R., suggesting collaboration may work. Still, finances remain the central problem, while rumors in the newspapers and more than a few sincere signs of support create a mixed atmosphere.

Sunday, November 30:

Looked through the sketches again by daylight. A truly beautiful impression; Valhalla depicted with consummate beauty, the sketch of the awakening of the Wala quite wonderful.

Lunch with the mayor and the painter, the latter turning out to be a cultured man who has, it seems, adopted a stiff and pedantic manner as an antidote to Viennese shallowness. But he seems to have a very great respect for R., and I think an understanding will be possible. The big question, though, is how to find the means?

The newspapers are saying that the theater construction is subsiding, and other ugly lies of this sort, yet despite this we are always receiving touching proofs of sympathy, isolated, perhaps, but genuine and powerful.

Spent the evening conversing quietly with R. and Malwida.
