Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 27, 1873

Overview

The diarist sleeps badly, partly because of the household rearrangement, but is pleased that their friend is joining them. R. works, and the evening turns to Martin Luther and his rejection of an alliance with Mainz, which they admire. There is also a light, humorous family moment with Fidi, and the day closes with reflections on Mozart’s grace and formal severity.

Thursday, November 27:

Bad night, I think in consequence of the house rearrangement difficulties I have still to face today, but am glad our friend is joining us. R. works. Yesterday, when the dean was talking about my bust, R. played Brünnhilde’s theme, from her appearance with Siegfried in the prologue to Götterdämmerung, and said this portrayed the expression on its face.

In the evening we take up friend Martin Luther again and read with real admiration about his rejection of the alliance with Mainz. Today R. went for a walk with Fidi, who says his papa told him that he would be given drums for his feet when he one day went out riding. R. received our friend with “Diesen heiligen Hallen kennt man die Rache nicht”, which amused us greatly.

The symphony we heard at the concert leads us back to Mozart, the divine gracefulness of his themes and the terrible formalism in which he sometimes clothes them.
