Monday, November 24:

R. dreams of a path which grows ever narrower. “Never mind,” he says on waking, “I know this already, have already dreamed it several times.” He is not quite well and does not wish to go out of doors. I start on my Christmas expeditions, peaceful lunch with the children.

In the evening read Luther with Malwida; the quarrel about the sacrament, how important and significant Luther’s decision! And how irreligious of Zwingli to touch on this very point, which can hardly be spoken about! The Bible was the thing on which Luther took his stand. Nowadays, when rationalism has so gained the upper hand, he can hardly be comprehended, and yet his decision was such an important one.
