Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 15, 1873

Overview

On November 15, the day is filled with practical worries and a visit over wallpaper matters, though the larger tone stays reflective. The strongest impression comes from reading Luther’s post-Wittenberg sermons, which are praised for their inward force and lack of violent revolution. The writer is deeply moved by Luther as a true folk hero and marvels at his historical and spiritual strength.

Content

Saturday, November 15:

R. works very diligently, but it tires him. Our good little Dönhoff sends us a certificate of patronage, but otherwise our affairs are very tepid. With R. to the house; wallpaper questions.

In the evening, read Luther again, the preachings following his return from Wittenberg, wonderful: everything from within, nothing revolutionary as with the French, but preserving, letting things remain, no iconoclasm, no violent abolitions, always just preaching the Word! He could protect the elector prince more than the prince could protect him! Indescribably uplifting and moving, the true folk hero.
