Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 10, 1873

Overview

She sent off the verse to Pest and took the children to the increasingly splendid theater, while R. immersed himself in German grammar and Grimm. A humorous quotation from Lessing about women who think amused them both. In the evening, Malwida introduced a cultured and lively Russian visitor, Prince Mestshersky.

Monday, November 10:

We send off the verse to Pest. I walk with the children to the theater, which grows ever more splendid!

R. occupies himself with German grammar, the origin of the word Demut [humility], Dienen [serving], etc. He reads a great deal of Grimm, in whom, under the word “think,” he finds a quotation from Lessing that makes our hearts laugh: “A woman who concerns herself with thinking is like a man who paints his face.”

In the evening, Malwida brings along a very pleasant Russian, Prince Mestshersky, very cultured and lively.
