Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 24, 1873

Overview

On October 24, Wagner is unable to work and the household receives disappointing news from several fronts, including a regretful letter from Herr Haymann and silence from Herr Erlanger. Feustel's Munich plan is renewed, while a royalty payment from Berlin offers some financial relief and negotiations continue over other cities. The day also includes more reading of Uhland and a reflection on E. Sue's Joan of Arc, especially the author's focus on her formative youth.

Friday, October 24, 1873:

R. did not work today, either. Letter from Herr Haymann: he much regrets. Herr Erlanger keeps silent. R. promises Herr Fejistel to go to Munich with him around November 15. Berlin surprises us with a royalty payment of 254 thalers for two performances in the off season, and Batz reports that a settlement is being worked out with the management with regard to Wiesbaden, Kassel, and Hanover.

Read Uhland again. Recently R. spoke of E. Sue’s book about Joan of Arc, how well the author seeks the reasons for her emergence in the impressions that she received during her adolescent years; her emotional turbulence in this period is thus directed entirely toward a hatred of the English and a longing to drive them out of France; her development into a woman was passed over, as it were, she remained a maiden.
