Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 7, 1873

Overview

Despite a telegram, Zacharias still does not answer, and instead the couple receives an invitation from the Liszt Committee in Pest to attend a ceremony honoring the writer's father. R. is irritated by this distraction, though he remains faithful to his daily work on the score, while the unfinished house continues to vex him. Evening reading from Uhland is especially moving, and the sight of clergymen in the street seems to underline the day's solemn tone.

Tuesday, October 7:

In spite of R.’s telegram, Herr Zacharias continues to keep silent; instead there comes from the Liszt Committee in Pest an invitation to me and R. to attend the ceremony marking my father’s 50 years of professional activity. R. is very vexed about it. I am still undecided whether I shall have to go. Best of all is that R. is remaining true to his vow of working every day on his score. I make inquiries about the title of the head of the Committee, Archbishop Haynald, before making my decision.

Went to the new house, where work is practically at a standstill, to R.’s great vexation. In the evening Uhland’s fine Saga of Syrnit, who will not open her eyes, very touching moments.

All day long seeing clergymen in the street; they have come.
