Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 3, 1873

Overview

On October 3, the household receives the strict governess, introducing yet another new presence. Financial worries continue as a letter from Herr Voltz suggests they will likely recover nothing from the Haase lawsuit, though a Munich supporter secretly offers to buy a third patronage share from saved money. R. works in good humor, joking about scoring everything for horns. The evening closes with readings from Uhland and another Indian tale, leaving the day on a literary and imaginative note.

Friday, October 3:

“The strict governess,” as Fidi calls her, is here; another new being. Letter from Herr Voltz: we shall probably receive nothing from the Haase lawsuit. R. works and says jokingly that he would like to score everything for horns. Very nice letter from a Frau Emilie Easier in Munich, who says she has saved up 100 thalers without her relations’ knowledge and wishes secretly to buy a third share in a certificate of patronage.

In the evening we read in Uhland the legend of the nocturnal conjurations of Angandy’s daughter—quite splendid. To conclude the evening R. reads us another Indian story, the four foolish Brahmans.
