Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 20, 1873

Overview

The morning was devoted to the children in the garden, with French lessons for the older girls but not the younger ones. A thunderstorm did not keep them indoors in the afternoon. In the evening the diarist read Nietzsche's pamphlet aloud to a friend and came away with an unpleasant impression. The mood suggests a quiet day overshadowed by intellectual unease.

Content

Wednesday, August 20:

In the morning to the garden with the children and read with them, French with the elder girls, but with the little ones I have given up the foreign language, on the advice of both Malwida and R.).

In the afternoon to the garden again, in spite of a thunderstorm. In the evening read Nietzsche’s pamphlet to our friend and am sorry to get from it an unpleasant impression of various things.
