Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 29, 1873

Overview

Sunday is marked by church, family, and a sermon that turns salvation into a practical insurance policy, which the diary notes with dry irony. Kietz's presence at lunch adds warmth but also sadness, as his labor seems increasingly burdensome to the writer. The evening returns to Uhland and to comparative saga reading, where the juxtaposition of Persian and German heroic material yields genuine delight. The day feels quiet, observant, and intellectually sustained rather than eventful.

Content

Sunday, June 29:

To church with the children; from the sermon we learn that, just as we have to take out fire insurance, so, too, must we insure ourselves for Heaven! R. works.

Family lunch with our good Kietz, whose work makes me more and more melancholy!

In the evening read Uhland; the comparison between the Persian Saga and the Wolfdietrich Saga pleases us immensely.
