Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 2, 1873

Overview

A difficult morning begins with interruptions and missed opportunities, then drifts into work, errands, and a military band in the afternoon. The new dog becomes a symbol of vulnerability and anxiety, reviving memories of earlier loss. Beneath the domestic surface lies concern about practical usefulness, especially when possible helpers appear and vanish. The day has the feel of being unsettled by both small accidents and larger responsibilities.

Monday, June 2:

First fine day, but it does not start well for R. At a very early hour Feustel and Councilor Bluntschli are announced; he does not have them shown in, but the thought that Bl. might be of use to our undertaking torments me. I tell R. this, and he goes off, after Putz has knocked over our coffee table and delayed our breakfast!

The morning is consequently lost for work.

In the afternoon, to the military band, playing mainly things by Offenbach. R. home tired. The new dog alarms us with his delicacy and his excitability; we think of Fitzo's fate.
