Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 18, 1873

Overview

Heat, travel preparations, and musical delays create a sense of strain, though there is also domestic help and brief companionship in the work of arranging books. Wagner is irritated by the stalled pamphlet and dismisses the biography as wasted energy even as he keeps completing it. The day feels transitional, marked by weather, fatigue, and unfinished business.

Content

Friday, April 18:

Fidi helps his papa arrange books and hands him Creuzer’s Symbolik. The musicians’ convention in Leipzig is holding up work on the new pamphlet, and R. is very vexed about it.

Sultry air, and finally a great thunderstorm, very unusual for Bayreuth at this time of year; everything is in bud, and were it not for the preparations for our journey, one could be merry!

In the evening the biography, “a useless waste of energy,” R. exclaims as he completes the Paris period.
