Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 15, 1873

Overview

A bright family outing fills the day with simple pleasure, from the landscape and local sights to Fidi’s charm and ease. Wagner also connects the present walk to an earlier memory of seeing Bayreuth, creating a sense of continuity across time. The day ends in fatigue, but with a warmth that comes from shared experience rather than external circumstance.

Tuesday, April 15:

Constant fine weather; I again write some letters, and we, the whole family, again make an outing. Today to Berneck; much pleasure in the sunshine, the woods, birds, castles, and also the people there. And particularly in Fidi, who walks well and talks charmingly with us.

R. recalls that it was on a journey from Berneck, when he was 23, that he first saw Bayreuth lying before him in the evening sun; he is looking forward to seeing it again like that. But the sun treacherously hides; still, the missing rays are replaced by the rays within our hearts: “To think I am now treading this same path again—and this time with you and Fidi!”

We are rather tired in the evening and can do no more.
