Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 6, 1873

Overview

A Sunday of church, visitors, and cultural exchange passes in a relatively orderly way. The arrival of Gedon and then Nietzsche and Rohde shifts the day from domestic routine to artistic and architectural discussion. Wagner’s house and latest essay become central topics, suggesting a community gathering around the Bayreuth circle.

Content

Sunday, April 6:

In church, and once more a long and dreary sermon. Family lunch, and afterward, quite unexpectedly, Herr Gedon, a sculptor from Munich and a friend of Lenbach’s, to whom we wished to entrust the decoration of our house, but whom we did not expect so soon.

After him Professors Nietzsche and Rohde arrive, and we visit the house, which Gedon cannot praise too highly.

Discussions about the theater in the evening. R. reads his latest essay.
