Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 12, 1873

Overview

Illness in the household and legal unease dominate the day, though the family finds brief peace in the nursery and in an Indian drama. The diary records both practical concern and a return to reading, suggesting a fragile balance between distress and quiet enjoyment. The tone is subdued but not despairing.

Wednesday, March 12:

R. had a very wretched night, for which the infamies in Lucerne are to blame; another conference with Hoffmann, the clerk, as to whether we can expect to be taken to court here. Family lunch, after which Fidi put to bed, very unwell; the doctor is called and ascribes it to slight indigestion. Around midnight I visit the nursery once more and find them all sleeping peacefully. We begin with great enjoyment the Indian drama Malavikagnimitra.
