Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 11, 1869

Overview

Good rest improves both Cosima and Richard, and he hopes to return to composition while they weigh who should conduct Siegfried's christening. Their son's first garden outing, household discussions with Vreneli, and Richard's renewed work on Siegfried give the day a healthier rhythm. Letters from Hermine, Chaillou, and Flaxland temper comfort with financial caution, while Don Quixote and a tender good night close it.

Content

Friday, June 11:

Restored by a good night's rest, the first for a long time. R. better, too. He declares he wants to see if he can take up composition again. Christening discussed; question: whether local priest? Schure's father-in-law or R.'s nephew Clemens? Delay deemed expedient. Letter from a lady harpist!

Improved condition: our son is to be taken for a walk in the garden for the first time. R. works on Siegfried again. I discuss household affairs in detail with Vreneli. Toward midday from bed to the salon, on the sofa. There ate with R. The boy taken out. Eva alone in the house.

In the evening letters: from Hermine, concerning the children, comforting; Chaillou; Flaxland to R. Little prospect of financial gain from the Paris success, for the time being.

Don Quixote splendid! Part of the afternoon and evening spent on it. Tender “good night.”
