Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 5, 1873

Overview

The day is shaped by illness, domestic strain, and relentless practical duties, yet the household keeps moving through sheer resolve. Amid letters, shopping, and committee matters, there are also encouraging signs of support for R.'s work and the arrival of interesting books. The tone is one of endurance under pressure, with obligations pressing in from every side.

Content

Wednesday, March 5:

A complete hospital: Lusch, Loldi, Boni, Eva ill or indisposed, Käthchen unwell, and no cook! No choice but to throw back my shoulders and carry on. Household shopping with Fidi and Eva; in addition, many letters received and written, partly in connection with the birthday, partly business. Old Weitzmann reports that Loser and Coerper in Berlin have suddenly turned out to be millionaires and wish to guarantee 8,000 thalers if R. will conduct the Ninth Symphony there!

Committee meeting at Feustel's house to consider sending Herr Batz to the various societies as an agent, in order to set things straight. Our excellent friend Marie Schl. reports two new patrons; she has done it all herself! A lot of books which R. bought second-hand arrive in the evening, very interesting works, among them Schlegel's book on the language of the Indians.
