Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 24, 1873

Overview

News arrives that Bayreuth is being promoted aggressively, but the report is tangled with vanity and uncertainty. R. remains unwell while work continues on the Rheingold score, and the weather mirrors the mood with snow and storms. Financial anxieties deepen as the possibility of postponement is weighed, though the evening still ends in the consolation of the Fancha tantra.

Content

Monday, February 24:

Letter from Frau von Meyendorff, who writes, among other things, that the Grand Duke of Weimar is doing propaganda for Bayreuth and claiming to possess certificates of patronage!! R. corrects the score of Das Rheingold, but he is still not well. Bad weather, snow, and storms; letter from the little Countess Donhoff.

Anxious feelings; will the whole thing have to be postponed? R. must undergo a cure this summer, and God knows how things stand with the money. In the evening, the second book of the Pancha tantra, with unabated enjoyment.
