Monday, February 17:

Bad night for both of us; Boni constantly whimpering. Letters arrive, one from Lucerne: Herr Am Rhyn stands revealed as a complete rogue. After R., out of consideration for him, paid the rent in advance and gave him the key, he refuses to allow the assessment on our behalf to be made, and allows nobody into the house, which belongs to us until April, because he himself has caused damage in it, for which he now wants to sue us. Always counting on R.’s weak side in order to swindle money from him, that is what the lawyer Meyer says, whom the Stockers consulted!

Hardly is this chapter completed when R. notices that three 20-mark gold coins are missing from his writing desk, always unlocked! House search, in the cook’s room several things are discovered which belong to us, horrible appearance of the culprit! I avoid all scenes, everything is done in apparent calmness. On top of that Boni very unwell! In the evening the Volsunga Saga helps divert our minds to other impressions.
