Saturday, February 15:
Yesterday’s reading leads our conversation to the church, the Jewish conception of God the Father, who, standing above it all, created this world, and so on, the terrible circle in which all theology now revolves. “I can more or less understand the strict outlook of the present Protestant church council,” R. says. “They feel that if they yield a single point, everything will be thrown overboard, and only the Catholic church with its firm organization will be left intact.”
Wrote some letters. Boni is unwell, and I put her to bed and stay with her all day. In the evening the good dean sends me a greeting in verse and a vade mecum, consisting of extracts from various books which the excellent man had once made and published at a time of financial need. We read it and take particular pleasure in discovering what the dean thinks striking and worthy of note.
