Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 8, 1873

Overview

The return to Bayreuth restores a sense of homecoming and emotional settlement after the recent journey. The children’s welcome is exuberant, and the narrator frames the moment as a gift of hope and gratitude. Even practical matters, like the letters from Hans and the invitation from the father, remain secondary to the warmth of family life and the pleasure of arrival.

Saturday, February 8:

Departure at 6:50 a.m., in Bayreuth by one o’clock; begin to feel at home as early as Neumarkt, where R., with the Bayreuther Tagblatt in his hand, says he can already hear the children stamping around below. Rapturous welcome from the children, all well and in good spirits, Fidi particularly wide awake and happy.

The great happiness of hope; feelings of gratitude toward the Godhead which has granted me this happiness! I discover that a letter from Hans has arrived for Daniella (today is his concert in Berlin), and there is one for me from my father, who invites us to Pest. God knows whether we shall have to go there, for we shall certainly go only if we have to.

Family lunch, and children afternoon and evening. Blandine is somewhat indisposed; her place in the classroom was beside the stove, and it has given her a swollen cheek; but with her development otherwise I am satisfied.
