Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 29, 1873

Overview

A long-awaited personal reconciliation is reached, and Wagner emphasizes that harmony with her matters more than anything else. While he handles a court visit and she shops, the evening socializing introduces several aristocratic figures. The entry closes on a dreamlike note, linking private feeling, grief, and companionship in sleep and waking life.

Wednesday, January 29:

At last everything is resolved between R. and me! He says nothing can affect him except not being in utter harmony with me. That cuts at his very roots! I do some shopping. He visits the Duchess of Mecklenburg, who was very anxious to make his acquaintance and who, it seems, spoke to him very graciously.

In the evening, at Frau von Schleinitz's, with Countess Oriola and Countess Briihl (lady in waiting to the Crown Princess).

R. last night dreamed of happiness with me. I dreamed that I saw Hans weeping and wept with him.
