Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 7, 1873

Overview

The author’s birthday is celebrated with gifts, visitors, and social calls that mix warmth with political conversation. News about Bismarck’s removal and other public matters sits beside affectionate family exchanges and a welcome letter from her father. A promised reading is fixed, and old acquaintances come and go, with some annoyances from Kastner in the background. The emphasis is on gratitude and connection, especially in the lovely present from Paris.

Tuesday, January 7:

R. surprises me with a lovely writing case from Paris; my birthday is to be celebrated today, and we have invited the mayor, the dean, and friend Feustel, and to them is added Herr von Gersdorff, who suddenly arrives from Silesia; we demand from him a report on Bismarck’s removal from the Prussian government - it really looks as if the Conservative and the Clerical parties have joined hands to restore particularism to Prussia.

Nice letter from Herr von Schleinitz; the reading is fixed for the 17th. Letter from my father, who is not entirely well, but is in very good spirits; he asks for a meeting with us in Pressburg. Departure of Herr v. G., whom we have much enjoyed seeing again (unpleasant Kastner tricks); and of Richter, who is and will always remain the same. (R. gives me a very lovely writing case from Paris.)
