Friday, November 29:
Devoted entirely to rest, that is to say, Richard writes letters to the Grand Duke, to Düfflipp, Feustel, etc., but we remain undisturbed.
At lunch our conversation leads us to dreams and apparitions; R. informs me of Daumer’s views, I tell him that I do not like all these interpretations. I believe in apparitions, but their inexplicability tells me more than all explanations. Curiously enough, R. dreams virtually always about states of mind, rather than apparitions. He believes that, after his last bad dream, his first wife has now taken leave of him and he will no longer see her in his dreams.
Mathilde arrives at about 6 o’clock and stays the night with us. R. goes for a walk, meets his two business associates, and in the evening brings them to the hotel; this is somewhat tiring. Wrote to the children.
