Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 15, 1872

Overview

R. had another miserable night, pacing nearly without pause, and the morning’s lunch with theater people and Wagner Society members felt too rich and demanding for his condition. Brandt stood out as tactful and intelligent amid a gathering otherwise marked by formality. They left in the evening and reached Mannheim late, where the excellent Heckels welcomed them.

Content

Friday, November 15:

R. had a very bad night, pacing up and down almost without a break.

Lunch with Brandt and the theater director Tescher, who is not performing Die Meistersinger, the conductor Nesvadba, and two members of the Darmstadt Wagner Society, with wives. A too-opulent meal, particularly for R.’s run-down state; but Brandt excellent, tactful, intelligent, and good.

Departure at 8 o’clock, arrival in Mannheim at 9:50 p.m., where we stay with the excellent Heckels.
