Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 23, 1872

Overview

She wakes from a dream of Hans and carries the day in a sorrowful mood, though a tender letter from her father offers some consolation. R. writes to Nietzsche about a planned visit to Basel and sends along clippings and polemical material defending his work from critics. The evening is spent quietly over a novel, with grief and literary business mingling together.

Content

Wednesday, October 23:

Dreamed of Hans, much sadness in my heart. A little note from my father in Regensburg, sorrowfully affectionate.

R. writes to Prof. Nietzsche, announcing our visit to Basel, and among other things he encloses a little clipping from a newspaper, in which some tasteless extracts from opera texts are quoted and criticized, with the remark, “This goes even further than R. Wagner!” A pamphlet has also been sent us which sets out to prove that Die Meistersinger is a backward step in W.’s development.

E. Ollivier sends a book about M. Angelo and Raphael! In the evening we skim through a new volume of that novel Das Scepter und Kronen.
