Monday, October 14:
Still not quite well, but on my feet; R. has all sorts of letters, among them two lines from New York full of abuse. I say jokingly that this is the first outcome of Anton Rubinstein’s stay in N.Y.
Josef R. also writes; he has not been successful with Hans. Dr. Kafka writes from Vienna that he is reckoning on good success this winter.
Recently Herr Hoffmann reported lamentable things about Semper, who has gone into partnership with a quite miserable architect, Hasenauer, and just makes a few corrections on the latter’s plans, so that the Hofburg is to be built in the worst late-rococo style. I say to R. that Semper has gone to rack and ruin through his bad behavior toward us, just like Maurice of Nassau through his toward Barnevelt!
In the evening we continue reading Gozzi, with great interest. Lulu is attending school; I am working now with Boni and Loldi, who finds learning difficult.
