Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 29, 1872

Overview

The day stayed quiet and orderly, with R. softened by my hurt feelings from the previous day and occupied with writing to the Turkish ambassador. We received the mayor and his wife, walked through town, and enjoyed the novelty of being settled among other people rather than isolated. When a passerby recognized R. and called for an umbrella, we were amused, and the evening was spent happily reading Hoffmann's Signor Formica.

Sunday, September 29:

Still putting things in order, R. very gentle as a result of my feelings yesterday. He writes to the Turkish ambassador. Visit from the mayor and his wife.

In the afternoon we go for a walk. R. recalls how long it has been since he lived in a town and says what a comfortable feeling it gives him to be married to me and to be a human being among other human beings. We resolve to familiarize ourselves with the outskirts of the town.

It starts to rain; as we seek shelter in the Grüner Baum, a woman recognizes R. and calls for an umbrella “for Herr Richard Wagner.” I write to M. Schleinitz. In the evening we begin Hoffmann’s “Signor Formica,” which R. thought of again at lunchtime and which we enjoy very much.

Letter from Frau Svendsen.
