Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 25, 1872

Overview

We spent the day still sorting the house and eating out, while the servants and the household remained unsettled. The arrival of the rest of R.'s library finally let us begin arranging his room, though he was restless, ill, and discouraged by everything coming from outside. Even so, he remained tender toward me, and a letter from H. von Gersdorff added a small sign of life amid the chaos.

Content

Wednesday, September 25:

Still arranging things and putting them in their proper places, still no cook, obliging us to go to a hotel. The contemptuous treatment in the Sonne yesterday, because we ordered a simple meal, makes us decide on the Reichsadler, where we suffer through the people’s impudent custom of regarding one uninterruptedly through lorgnettes.

Today the remainder of R.’s library at last arrived, so we are now able to set to work on his room. R. very restless and disgruntled: he can do nothing, is still not well, and what arrives from outside is not exactly heartening, but toward me he is all love and kindness and says amid tears that he is sorry for me!

Letter from H. v. Gersdorff.
