Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 20, 1872

Overview

Our final walk around the Fantaisie with the children felt like a farewell to a place already growing melancholy as our belongings were packed. News of a terrible town fire, with losses for our decorator and the reported death of his son, darkened the mood further. R. also heard how badly old acquaintances such as Rockel had fared, which prompted a painful reckoning with the broken endings of many former friendships.

Friday, September 20:

Last walk around the Fantaisie with the children, Fidi with us the whole time; it is beginning to look melancholy here, all our little possessions are being packed. “I turn my back gladly on the past, toward something with a future.”

Our spirits are also damped by news of a great fire in town which this morning struck our decorator, too; he is said to have had severe losses, and his son is reported to have been killed.

R. learns from A. Röckel’s son, who is seeking employment as a chorist, that Röckel has completely gone to seed! This leads to a review of all past relationships; alas, how wretchedly most of them have ended!
