Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 28, 1872

Overview

While the children are in church, she stays in the garden with Fidi and Eva writing letters, as R. continues his biography work and reads a mountain book with curiosity. The weather turns stormy, and the evening brings tenor, pianist, and singing from Herr Diener, along with the completion of Rheingold. R. is shaken by news that the Beethoven descendant he once recommended has been arrested, while other letters bring developments about publishers, Berlin, and her father.

Content

Sunday, July 28:

The children in church; I in the garden with Fidi and Eva, writing letters to Lucca, Claire, Fritz. R. is still correcting his biography and is enjoying the book about mountains, from which he learns, among other things, that Arminius was never in the service of Rome.

Thundery atmosphere; I in the park with the children; in the evening the tenor and the pianist; finished Rheingold. Herr Diener sings some of the Wesendonck songs.

R. is very shocked to read in the newspaper that the descendant of Beethoven whom he recommended to the King’s bounty has been arrested for fraudulent conversion. “I have had no luck with my recommendations. The singing teacher Schmitt, Mme Schnorr, Hallwachs, Fröbel, Baron Perfall, and now Beethoven!”

Much joy in Fidi; but Loldi still troubled with her eye.

Letter from the agents that Herr Fürstner in Berlin has bought up Meser’s business; R. very pleased, would like to sever all connections with Schott. Letter to me from A. Frommann: she has left Berlin and is asking the Empress to release her.

Nothing from my father; it looks as if Frau v. M[eyendorff] has achieved her aim.
