Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 26, 1872

Overview

The family is pleased with Fidi's good conduct from the previous day, though the heat is oppressive and Loldi's eye remains a concern. R. divides his day between biography corrections and practical business matters, and Herr Rubinstein visits in the evening without any music making. The day ends with the Lenbach paintings being packed away, leaving the wall bare and strangely restful despite the household's admiration for the pictures.

Friday, July 26:

Today we are still feeling pleased with Fidi’s good behavior yesterday. R. works on his corrections; excessive heat, Loldi’s eye still not better. R. also attends to business matters, Voltz, etc. Herr Rubinstein in the evening, but there is no music-making.

Today I packed the three Lenbach pictures and had to admit laughingly to R. that I found the bare wall restful; everything that is truly art affects me so powerfully that I am sometimes almost afraid of coming into contact with it, and these three pictures are true works of art.
