Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 10, 1872

Overview

The morning brought a flood of nonsense from various people, including a man from Coburg sending drawings for the King of Bavaria and another scheme linking Toser to support for Bayreuth and the Nibelungs in Berlin. In contrast, my greatest comfort was the children, especially Fidi, who seemed full of promise. R. worked, and after lunch we went into town, visited the Feustels, and checked on the house we expect to rent. The walk home through splendid weather and birdsong gave R. fresh musical ideas, and the evening ended with a little Gibbon.

Content

Wednesday, July 10:

A gentleman from Coburg, Dovris, I believe, sends drawings for the King of Bavaria, recommending a “historic oven” he has made; unutterable nonsense!

Yesterday Herr Tappert once more suggested an association with Toser, with the object, firstly, of supporting Bayreuth, then of producing the Nibelungen in Berlin!!

My only joy is the children, Fidi a constant source of hope. R. works.

After lunch to town. To the Feustels’; the house we are to rent, etc. Splendid weather; home on foot from the Schweizerei, splendid birdsong, on which R. at once builds a symphonic movement.

In the evening read a little Gibbon, on the religion of Christ and of Constantine, “supernatural or base reasons.”
