Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 22, 1872

Overview

The improvement in the dean’s condition is the day’s good news, and it gives a lighter tone to the household. While she stays with the children in the garden, R. works, though they are both irritated by a ridiculous illustrated scene from the opera-house ceremony. Herr Feustel visits with a patron from Aschaffenburg, and R. receives unwelcome news from Franz Schott that the scores of Rheingold and Walküre have not yet been sent for copying. The day mixes relief with renewed impatience over delays that keep the music from moving forward.

Saturday, June 22:

The news that our dean is improving is today’s joyful event. R. works while I am with the children in the garden.

Very insufferable picture of the ceremony in the opera house in the Illustrirte Zeitung. Stupid offerings by the people; one is holding out brass helmets, another gold braid, a third a marionette theater, etc.

Visit from Herr Feustel, who brings with him a patron from Aschaffenburg. Unpleasant news for R. from his publisher Franz Schott: he has not yet given the scores (Rheingold and Walküre) out to be copied.
