Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 14, 1872

Overview

R. has a vivid dream about a rosebush at his bedside that turns strangely tropical before he wakes, and the day is punctuated by more practical matters like cigars from Havana and a final sitting for the medal maker. He works again on Götterdämmerung, while the household finds moments of calm in the afternoon walk and the quiet time with the children. Even the girls join in by making curl papers for his hair, but the evening is cut short when a telegram announces yet another visit from Herr Batz, bringing fresh interruption. The day feels like a brief balance of beauty and disturbance, with peace always threatened at the edge.

Friday, June 14:

R. dreams of a rosebush which was growing at the head of his bed, and on which the roses were so large that he thought to himself, “You must show them to Cosima.” Then they fell off like camellias; one remained, which he was just about to pluck when it fell, shed its petals, and revealed a core something like a pineapple, which Loldi ate. He was just wanting to show that, too, when he woke up.

Arrival of cigars from Havana (“the delicious weed,” writes the supplier); it is a present from Herr Nettke. Last sitting for the medal maker, which unfortunately means another morning lost, but I hope it will turn out well. R. then again plays Götterdämmerung and is looking forward to working on it. When will he at last find the peace and quiet for it?

In the afternoon with Fidi and Eva to the Schweizerei (the others are in the town). Then for a walk alone with R. Fine weather, lovely rest. In the evening the four girls work on R.’s head and make curl papers for his locks!

Early to bed, since R. is not well; sudden disturbance by a telegram: Herr Batz, the agent, is coming, another disturbance.
