Saturday, June 1:
Letter from Marie Schl., which I answer at once; she wants to try to win over Princess Margherita, who is now in Berlin, for Bayreuth. Yesterday R. expressed his gratitude to the minister.
As bad luck would have it, R. comes upon the page of the newspaper containing the notice about Herr W[eissheimer], and is greatly incensed by this malicious fabrication. He writes first of all to Herr W., demanding a correction, then sends the A.A.Z. a notice for insertion.
I am quite indisposed and cannot walk much. R. visits Dr. Falko, the mental specialist who is our neighbor and who has been very friendly toward us; there he has to listen to a great deal about Herr Gutzkow, once the glory of the mental hospital!
In the evening R. reads our friends passages from his biography; they are very affected by it.
