Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 6, 1872

Overview

In Linz, R. was pleased by good coffee and by the landscape near Vienna, which reminded him of Beethoven and even of passages from the sonatas. They arrived at ten to find many Wagner supporters waiting, had reassuring news about Kafka, and settled in comfortably with the Standhartners. After lunch Herbeck pressed them to attend a Wagner performance, something that remained unfamiliar to R., and the evening ended with a walk through the Volksgarten and an early night.

Monday, May 6:

In Linz R. is given good coffee. The country around Vienna pleases him; he can imagine Beethoven in it and recognize the atmosphere of many of the sonatas. Penzing! “All the past before our coming together was folly!”

Arrival at 10 o’clock, many Wagner Society-ites, reassurance concerning Kafka, nice accommodation with the Standhartners. Unfortunately, after lunch Herbeck expects us to attend a performance of one of the Wagner works. It is finally approved, since so unfamiliar to R. In the evening, walk in the Volksgarten. Early to bed.
