Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 28, 1872

Overview

This is the first entry written at the Fantaisie, and it begins with concern: R. fears she has not yet announced their departure, so she resolves to leave the next day. She spends the rest of the day working through letters, farewells, and a last visit to Vreneli’s baby, before taking a final boat home. In the evening she wanders through Tribschen with deep gratitude, remembering both its happiness and its hardships.

Sunday, April 28:

These are the first words written at the Fantaisie.

Telegram from R.; he is worried that I have not yet signaled our departure, so I resolve to set off tomorrow. Much work in consequence, and letters besides.

Said goodbye to Countess Bassenheim. Then went to see Vreneli's baby at the farm; last journey home by boat. Idyllic impression.

In the evening, prolonged ramble through the whole of Tribschen, full of gratitude to the gods for granting me such happiness here; it was always lovely, even the difficult times.
