Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 24, 1872

Overview

The day is consumed by more sorting, yet the mood shifts as messages arrive from Bayreuth and from allies reporting that Karlsruhe’s orchestra will likely take part. As she relays the good news onward, the landscape around her seems to mirror the moment: blossom, birdsong, cowbells, sunset, and moonlight. Beneath the beauty is a strong sense of farewell and that life is entering a new phase.

Content

Wednesday, April 24:

Still sorting papers, from morning to evening.

In the evening, telegram from R. in Bayreuth: he has arrived safely! Letters from Standhartners and Levi, who reports the downfall of the director Kaiser and hence the participation of the Karlsruhe orchestra in the performance. I report it all to R.

Splendid sunset, alpenglow, trees in blossom, the cuckoo calls, the cowbells tinkle, a blackbird calls. Melancholy farewell! Glorious moonlight across the water, shining stillness all around me. How different things will be now!
