Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 12, 1872

Overview

Feustel’s letter and Neumann’s difficulties bring more discouragement, though the formation of a Wagner Society in Darmstadt offers a sign of widening support. R. prepares for the 9th Symphony and reflects sadly that, despite having a family, he still has no real home. Their personal worries are set aside for a moment as the agents do well and the evening ends with a walk in splendid weather and more fairy tales.

Friday, April 12:

Letter from Feustel; Herr Neumann quite impossible; all else not exactly heartening. A Wagner Society is being set up in Darmstadt. R. prepares for his performance of the Ninth Symphony. In our personal affairs we declare an armistice.

R. reflects with sorrow that he, though he has a family, has no home; will his old longing never be satisfied?

Letter from the agents, who are achieving much. Walk with R., most gorgeous weather. In the evening the fairy tales.
