Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 8, 1872

Overview

Feustel reports that Neumann has done no work all winter and must be dismissed, while Brandt also seems to have slipped away, leaving R. with more frustration over the stalled plans. Another reply from Councilor D. says things will remain unchanged, which only intensifies the bitterness because that is no longer enough. R. feels the loss of the house deeply, and the day closes with shopping, letters, and Indian fairy tales.

Monday, April 8:

Letter from Feustel: Neumann has done no work on the plans all winter, so must be dismissed. R. sends a telegram to Brandt, the machinist, who is also keeping silent; R. thinks he has been lured away by Munich, a view confirmed by a telegram from his son: “Father away from home.”

Spring weather: “Now just one more shower,” R. says, “and everything will open up like umbrellas.” Letter from Councilor D., saying “everything will remain as it was before” the only pity being that we no longer want that! R. is very melancholy at the thought of his abandoned house.

I do some shopping in town. (Letters to K. v. Gersdorff and to Clemens.) In the evening read the Indian fairy tales.
