Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 6, 1872

Overview

Letters from Dr. Kafka and Hans Richter find R. exhausted by the emotional burden he is carrying, though he continues to work. He looks worn down when she meets him in town, and the evening is spent with more fairy tales that briefly lighten the atmosphere. R. also reflects bitterly on the Joly people, dismissing their pose of modesty as hostility to greatness.

Content

Saturday, April 6:

Letters from Dr. Kafka and from Hans Richter; R. is tired, he says he has taken too much on himself, and what he is experiencing is too upsetting. He works all the same.

I go to town, there meet R., who looks very run down. In the evening read more fairy tales; the laughing fish gives us much delight, also the cursing bear.

When we recently spoke of the Joly people, R. said they were both cantankerous fellows who affected a love of quietness and modesty because they hated great things.
