Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 30, 1869

Overview

Hans writes to Loulou after illness, Countess Krockow seeks a visit, and Cosima embroiders while helping Lusch write to her father. Richard, in the midst of Siegfried's music to the mother, silently presses her hand with fervor. Concern over Loulou and Boni's lifeless appearance beside Loldi and Eva leads into lessons on biblical history, natural history, butterflies, and Frederick's letters.

Content

Friday, April 30:

A letter from Hans to Loulou; he has been unwell. Also from Countess Krockow, who wants to visit me. Lusch writes to her father. I sit beside her, embroidering. R. comes in and presses my hand fervently; he is in the midst of his work, "Heil der Mutter, die mich gebar" ["Hail to the mother who bore me"].

The doctor comes on account of Lulu; I am not happy with her appearance. She and Boni look lifeless beside Loldi and Eva. After lunch I sent them into town, then I work with Lusch, a little biblical history, then natural history, and I point out to her butterflies, swallowtail, orange-tip, peacock, which yesterday flew up in front of us. Then everyone to bed, and R. again read me some of Frederick the Great's letters.
