Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 6, 1872

Overview

R. greets her on a lovely spring morning with a playful declaration of love, but the day soon turns tense because he receives an unsatisfactory medallion and bad news about Dresden, Vienna, and Karlsruhe. She spends time with Fidi and attends a dancing lesson while R. struggles to keep working amid growing frustration. Evening reading from Schopenhauer’s chapter on music lifts her mood again.

Wednesday, March 6:

“Yes, this is my wife, whom I love forever and ever” - R. calls out this hexameter to me on a lovely spring morning. Arrival of a medallion from Neusel, not very satisfactory. R. works. In the morning much joy in Fidi.

In the afternoon we go out - I to the dancing lesson, R. by himself. Returning home in the evening, I find him in a very bad humor; he has no news from Dresden or Vienna, and in Karlsruhe difficulties have arisen, so he has no idea whether the thing can be done at all. Much vexation: how can he keep his head free for his work in such circumstances? He writes several letters and sends off several telegrams. In the evening help comes from Schopenhauer, whose chapter on music particularly delights me.
