Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 24, 1871

Overview

Hans sends photographs and money for the children, stirring melancholy and reopening concerns about outside family influence during Cosima's absence. The Christmas tree brings jubilation, but Wagner is saddened that Lenbach's portrait, intended for Cosima, has not arrived and that the Mannheim birthday gift feels spoiled. A long tender conversation past midnight restores intimacy after the disappointment.

Content

Sunday, December 24:

Letter from Hans with photographs and remittance for the children. Melancholy. (During my absence her grandmother wrote to Lulu, asking about religious instruction and Hermine?) Prepared the presents, in the evening jubilation around the Christmas tree, but R. is sad because the picture by Lenbach, meant for me, has not arrived; this deeply distresses him; he also feels that the Mannheim treat—his real birthday present for me—had been spoiled. Long and tender conversation till past midnight. Then to bed.
