Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 21, 1871

Overview

After another sleepless night, Wagner and Cosima leave Mannheim escorted by friends and travel with Levi and Pohl toward Basel. A disappointing Loen letter contrasts with Wagner's fuller Bayreuth news: the foundation stone is fixed for May 22 and the town has presented the Stuckberg site. In recounting the mayor's toast to Cosima and Fidi, Wagner imagines their Bayreuth creation and names her its Margravine.

Thursday, December 21:

Neither of us slept; rose late; hairdresser who saw Tristan und Isolde in Munich and loves it above everything else. Departure at 12 o’clock, escorted by all our friends. — Very unsatisfactory letter from Baron Loën. Traveled with Levi, the conductor, and Pohl; of the former, R. says he respects him for the very reason that he calls himself Levi straight out, not Löwe or Lewin, etc. Evening in Basel with nephew and friend. R. relates much about Bayreuth; foundation-stone laying fixed for May 22; the Stuckberg site presented to R. by the town. The mayor proposed a toast to me and Fidi. R. says, “This will be our creation, you will be the Margravine of Bayreuth”!
