Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 18, 1869

Overview

Cosima is very unwell but remains constantly with the children, teaching Lusch geography and enjoying a cheerful family lunch. Puppet theater, magic lantern slides, Schubert, and Plato fill the day, while news and letters register divided reactions to Judaism in Music. Frantz praises the pamphlet as timely truth, whereas Eckert publicly calls it regrettable.

Content

Sunday, April 18:

Very unwell, but constantly with the children; gave Lusch a lesson on the globe. Family lunch, cheerful and nice. Afterward puppet show and later magic lantern. Loldi plays Kasperl, and she and Eva rejoice over the slides.

In the evening a little Schubert, without enjoyment, and a little Plato with R. Only he is tired and soon has to stop.

Curious news that Hiller is giving up his position as general factotum in Cologne; Judaism in music? R. had a very nice letter from Constantin Frantz; he says the pamphlet “is a true word spoken at the right time.” Prof. Eckert in his lecture on R. Wagner in Berlin described the pamphlet as regrettable!
