Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 18, 1871

Overview

Pohl reports that Baden city councilors may invite Wagner to build his theater there, adding another possibility to the Bayreuth question. Italian newspapers continue confirming Lohengrin's success, while Cosima shops and thanks Standhartner for hospitality. The injured child's mother shocks them by seeming interested only in compensation, and Mannheim telegrams report that Darmstadt's theater may be offered to Wagner.

Saturday, November 18:

The city councilors of Baden-Baden intend to invite R. to build his theater in Baden; that, at any rate, is what R. Pohl writes us. R. works. I thank Frau Standhartner, who has very kindly asked me to stay with her if we go to Vienna.

To town to do some shopping. In the evening, The Republic.

Newspapers from Italy, further confirming the success. The mother of the injured child comes and shocks us with her cynical lack of affection for the boy; all she cares about is the compensation, and sympathy means nothing to her. Telegram from Mannheim: Herr Heckel says the newspapers are reporting that the theater in Darmstadt will be placed at R.’s disposal.
