The Brown Book

Diary Entry of September 5, 1865

Overview

A walk beside the Isar recalls an intimate moment with Cosima, but Munich gives Wagner no feeling of home. He wishes chiefly for a place where he can dream and sleep undisturbed.

Tuesday, September 5:

Yesterday I was in Grosshesselohe. I rambled again through the wood by the Isar. It was there that my head rested on your lap! — With the evening light and a beautiful sunset the journey back was splendid: I gazed at the distant city growing closer — No feeling of home at all! The city itself no facial expression either! And should I say where I should like better? - Nowhere! It’s all the same where I am — If I can only dream: dearest to me is what disturbs me least in that. —

Dreaming and — sleeping! —
